Unit 1

We’ve learned 「dictionary form + ことができます」in  N5 Unit 36.

✔ In N4, Unit 1, we’ll learn a new form called 「possible form」, which as the same meaning as 「dictionary form + ことができます」. (※→　see free course)

✔ Connection:

In Group 1, vowel before V-ます form changes to「e」.
in short: [V （vowel「i」）-ます →　V （vowel「e」）-ます]
例：　行いきます (ikimasu) 　→　行いけます (ikemasu)
Eg.:   go 　→　can go

In Group 2, ます of V-ます form changes to「られます」.
in short：[V-ます →　 V-られます]
例：　食

※ Recently, as possible form in Group 2, 「れ」 instead of「ら」is used in conversations.
例：　 食べます → 食べ（ら）れます
Eg. :  eat 　→　can eat

In Group 3,     
・します(shimasu) 　→　できます (dekimasu)
   do  　→　     can do
・きます(kimasu)　→　こられます (koraremasu)
   do 　→　can come

※ Verbs such as「わかります」「しります」「見えます」「聞こえます」, with meaning of possibility cannot be changed to 「possible form」.

   Can I still use this PC?

2. このケーキは、まだ食たべられますか。

   Can I still eat this cake?

3. このツアーは、まだ申し込めますか。

   Can I still join this tour?

4. 一日漢字20個!?　そんなにたくさん覚え（ら）れない！

   20 kanji words per day !? I can't remember that much !

5. 朝5時!?　そんなに早く起き（ら）れない！

   5 in the morning !? I can't wake up that early !

6. 2ヶ月後!?　そんなに待てない！

   2 months later !? I can't wait that long !

7. 原さんは　ピアノがひけて／英語が話せて／有名人と会えて／長い休みがとれて、うらやましいです。

   I envy Ms. Hara can play the piano/speak English/meet famous people/take long vacation.

8. かぎがないと、入はいれない。

   I can't get in without a key.

9. 特急券がないと、乗れない。

   I can't ride it without a limited express train ticket.

10. これは女性ではないと、理解できない。

    One who is not woman can't understand this.
