Situation：
Do you have a passport? When do you need a passport?
You will go to Japan. You need a passport.

✔ When you merge these 2 sentences, use「とき」.
例：　日本にほんへ行くとき、パスポートが必要です。
Eg.:   When you go to Japan, you need a passport. 

✔ Connection:
① [dictionary form ＋ とき]
例：　時間に遅れるときは、必ず連絡をください。
Eg.:   You must tell me when you are late.

② [V-ない form ＋ とき]
例：　日本語がわからないとき、辞書で調べます。
Eg.:   When you don’t know a Japanese word, look up in the dictionary.

1. 意味がわからないときは、辞書で調べてください。

   Please look up in the dictionary when you don’t know the meaning.

2. 遅れるときは、必ず電話をしてください。

   You must make a call  when you are late.

3. 玄関が閉まっているときは、裏口から入ってください。

   Please enter from the back door when the front door is locked.

4. 仕事で悩んでいるとき、高橋さんが相談に乗ってくれました。

   Mr. Takahashi gave me some advice when I was worried at work.

✔ If the verb before 「とき」 is a「 dictionary form」, it means that this action has not been completed.
例：　スーパーへ行くとき、田中さんに会いました。
　　    （スーパーへ行く途中で田中さんに会いました。）
Eg.:    When I go to the supermarket, I meet Mr. Tanaka.
           (I meet Mr. Tanaka on my way to the supermarket.)

✔ If the verb is 「V-た form」, it means that the action has been completed.
例：　スーパーへ行いったとき、田中さんに会いました。
　　　 （スーパーで田中さんに会いました。）
Eg.:   When I went to the supermarket, I met Mr. Tanaka.
         (I met Mr. Tanaka at the supermarket.)

1. うちへ帰るとき、ご飯を買います。

   I buy something to eat when going back home.

2. 会社へ行くとき、コンビニで新聞を買いました。

   I bought newspaper at a convenience store when heading to work.

3. 会社へ行いったとき、受付で青木さんに会いました。

   I met Mr.Aoki at the reception desk when I arrived at the company.

4. 道みちに迷ったときは、交番で聞いてください。

   When you are lost, please ask at a police box.

5. 高橋さんがけがで入院したとき、お見舞いに行きました。

   When I was hospitalized with injury, Mr. Takahashi visited me in the hospital.

6. パスポートをなくしたときは、本当に焦りました。

   I felt panicked when I lost my passport.

7. 財布が見つかったとき、ほっとしました。

   I was relieved when I found my wallet.

8. 彼が入院したときは、心配しました。

   I was worried when he was hospitalized.

9. 疲れたとき、これを飲むといいですよ。

   When you get tierd, you'd better drink this. 

Question1：The room is hot. What shall I do?
Question2：You are free all day today. What will do you?
Question3：Were you a child 20 years ago? What were you doing everyday?

✔ When you use い-adj, な-adj or noun before 「とき」.
①い-adj：[い-adj ＋ とき]
例：　部屋が暑いとき、エアコンをつけます。
Eg.:    When the room is hot, please turn on the air-conditioning system.
②な-adj：[な-adj ＋ とき]
例：　ひまなとき、友達に会います。
Eg.2:   When I have spare time, I meet with my friends.
③noun：[noun ＋ の ＋ とき]
例：　子どものとき、よく公園で遊びました。
Eg.3:   When I was a child, I often played at the park.

1. 私が小学生のとき、家族で中国へ旅行に行きました。

   My family traveled to China when I was in elementary school.

2. 10歳のとき、東京に引っ越してきました。

   I moved to Tokyo when I was 10 years-old.

3. まだ独身／20代　のとき、大阪に住んでいました。

   I lived in Osaka when I was single/in my 20s.

4. 忙しいとき、手伝ってくれました。

   He/she helped me out when I was busy.

5. ひまなとき、映画を見ます。

   I watch movie when I have spare time.
